UNITED NATIONS RIO DECLARATION
 
“Recognising the Integral & Interdependent Nature of the Earth our Home"
(13 of the 27 principles in the Rio Declaration)
The UN Conference on Environment & Development ~ Having met at Rio de Janeiro June 1992 ~ With the goal of establishing a new & equitable partnership ~ Through the creation of new levels of co-operation between states, key sectors of societies, & people ~ Working towards international agreements which:
Respect the interests of all
Protect the integrity of the global environment & developmental system
Proclaims that: ONE: “Human beings are at the centre of concerns for sustainable development. They are entitled to a healthy & productive life in harmony with nature.” THREE: “The right to development must be fulfilled so as to equitably meet developmental & environmental needs of present and future generations.” FOUR: “In order to achieve sustainable development, environmental protection shall constitute an integral part of the development process and cannot be considered in isolation from it.”  

SEVEN: “States shall co-operate in a spirit of global partnership to conserve, protect & restore the health & integrity of the earth’s eco-system.” EIGHT: To achieve sustainable development & a higher quality of life for all people, states should reduce & eliminate unsustainable patterns of production & consumption & promote appropriate demographic policies.” TEN: “Environmental issues are best handled with the participation of all citizens.” ELEVEN: “States shall enact effective environmental legistlation.”
