| Unusually for such reports the World Commission report did not meet a wall of denial & disappear into oblivion. One reason for this was that the chair of the commission, Mrs Gro Harlem Bruntland, became the Norwegian prime minister & worked hard to promote the conclusions of the report at the highest levels. Bizarrely enough, she was supported in this by then UK premier Margaret Thatcher, who although she had originally opposed the establishment of the commission, had since become deeply concerned about the holes in the ozone layer. The reality that humanity can & is destroying it’s own life-support system was begining to sink in. | Both leaders promoted the enviroment issue at the UN, until, by the end of 1988, 50 world leaders had come out in strong support of the commission’s conclusions & calls were made for a gathering to discuss & act upon the commission’s findings. In 1989 a resolution was passed that a United Nations conference on Environment & Development should be held. In June 1992 heads of state met for the conference in Rio de Janeiro. Known as The ‘Earth Summit’ this gathering brought together 116 leaders of the planet’s nations. The largest such gathering ever. At the summit world leaders agreed to adopt: UN Agenda 21 | ||
